I’ve been absent from politics and this blog for a little over a week. I wish I could have spoken to how condescending I found Palin’s “Joe Six-Pack” comment during her debate, or how disgusted I am with McCain’s latest slew of ads. I’m not going to issue a comment on how McCain’s campaign has essentially ripped off Obama’s campaign in any and every way possible. I’m going to try really hard not to dwell on the fact that a giant toddler could become President of the country. No, I’m going to bitch about abortion, the latest issue to invade my TV.
The moment Palin was announced, I was all over the ‘net learning about her stances on issues–including her views on abortion. Palin is a member of Feminists for Life. She probably got married because she was knocked up, and now her daughter is going to do the same. At least she sticks to her guns (har har!). Maybe it was her addition to the ticket that brought choice up again.
Don’t flip out on me and tell me I’m a bad feminist because choice wasn’t my primary concern this election. (Some people have, and it hurts my sensitive little feelings.) Have you heard about the stock market lately? Yeah, I’ve been concerned about the economy for awhile (probably longer than John McCain, when I look back on it from my new biased-for-Obama POV).
Anyway. To me, choice shouldn’t be the primary concern for anyone in this campaign. Republicans shouldn’t be scared of that crazy baby killer Obama because one of the first things he’s going to look into is bringing their sons home from Iraq. I don’t think that Obama has a recipe for fetus pie or anything, so chill the hell out, Reds.
Why am I so bent out of shape? Well, the diocese in my area is putting flyers under wipers about Obama’s voting record when it comes to abortion. I almost want to go to Mass so I can see one of these puppies. Then, there’s the fact that I live in Pennsylvania. In addition to being inundated with Obama’s ads about McCain’s shitty healthcare plan and McCain’s ads about how Obama hates America/the troops/your family dog, there is a new ad from “Truth in Politics.” You should move away from any objects that you can throw and then watch it. But, in case you just got a new cell phone that you don’t want to fling at the nearest wall, here is the ad text:
Announcer: Senator Obama.
Why did you vote against protecting infants that survived late term abortions?
Not once, but four times.
Even Congress unanimously supported protections identical to those you blocked in Illinois.
The Supreme Court upheld the ban on partial birth abortions.
And yet today, you keep working to roll back this law.
Call Senator Obama. Tell him to stop trying to overturn these basic human rights.
The Committee for Truth in Politics is responsible for the content of this advertising.
All of those words? They’re spoken over a cute little baby rolling around.
I just don’t see the fairness in creating an ad like that. I don’t see liberals creating a montage of clinic bombings or abortion providers’ funerals to evoke emotion. There are no commercials featuring near-dead women and coat hangers to highlight McCain’s voting record regarding abortion… So. Why can conservatives get away with this?
I guess that’s kind of a rhetorical question, because there is really no justification.
So, there is a good chance I will be MIA from this blog more often. These independent ads combined with the heavy rotation of candidate-sponsored ads are making me want to move to Canada. Or a cave. Somewhere far, far away from this election.
