America: This Week in Politics

I’ve been MIA from politics in an effort to get into the holiday spirit, but since that has failed pretty miserably (bah humbug!) I’m back, and I bring with me some highlights of this past week in politics: from “Yes, Virginia, Obama will be president” to the wars in Iraq and your uterus.

Barack Obama is president! Yes, he won the November election, but it wasn’t official until Monday, December 15. Hey, any excuse to put his face on my newspaper is a good one; it’s a pleasant change from plummeting bar graphs depicting the economy. Oh and sorry, folks trying to challenge Obama’s citizenship–I think that’s kind of a lost cause at this point.

In other news, Bush still has a boner for the war in Iraq, and he stated in a speech at the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA that he’s made America safer since 9/11. But as we all learned this week, sometimes his opinions can be met with shoes. Furthermore, it seems like the rest of the world doesn’t want to get cobbled: British troops are scheduled to leave Iraq by July 31.

Meanwhile, Bush’s puppet-master must feel death’s cold hands on his shoulders. He says he’s changed. Perhaps the most important quote from this interview is:

“While I would not have hired Sen. Clinton, I think she’s tough,” the vice president added. “She’s smart, she works very hard and she may turn out to be just what President Obama needs.”

At least that’s what every news outlet and blog I’ve read has capitalized on, so I figured I should point it out. Yeah, bish, Cheney hearts Hillz. EPIC WIN!

There is, however, an EPIC FAIL this week, too, and it’s taking place in a uterus near you. The Bushies planned to finalize legislation regarding “right of conscience” this week. By the way, the wording of this legislation not only protects pharmacists who don’t want to give out birth control because it’s against their beliefs, it also could deny women the right to comprehensive healthcare. But have no fear! According to the WSJ, Team Obama is already considering how to undo it. I agree with Nancy Pelosi, who said in a press release:

“Make no mistake: this is a direct assault on women’s health care and may jeopardize patients’ rights to receive quality, comprehensive health care services. Congress will work with President-elect Obama to reverse this rule.”

Maybe there are Christmas miracles after all.
